Community Projects
Community Mural
Wells, Inc. received a grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development to commission a community mural. This mural was completed in the summer of 2023 by Latoya Peoples (Artist). This mural was done in memory of Ms. Connie Green who was a life-long resident of our community and who lived in this property. Ms. Green’s grandson now owns this property and is an active member of our community.

Cafe Lights in the Community
Wells, Inc. received a grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development to install exterior cafe lights. These lights not only brighten and beautify the neighborhood at night, but they also increase the safety of residents as they travel through the community in the dark. The blocks which received cafe lights from this grant are: 800 N. Luzerne Ave., 900 N. Luzerne Ave., 2500 Ashland Ave., 2600 Ashland Ave. and 2400 Eager St.

Community Gravel Park Transformation
Phase 1: In 2023, Wells, Inc. received a grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development to transform a community park for the benefit of the residences in the Milton-Montford neighborhood. The park’s ground was initially covered with gravel. This is how it affectionately became known as the ‘gravel park.’
The gravel park had grass growing through the gravel which made it extremely hard to maintain since it could not be cut using traditional means such as a lawnmower. Phase 1 consisted of removing all the vegetation and gravel from the ground and prepping it for proper landscaping.

Phase 2: In 2024, Wells, Inc. received a grant from the United Way to landscape the gravel park in our community. The landscaping consisted of adding over 60 plants which would not only bring value to the birds (we have a bird sanctuary), bees and butterflies in the community, but which would also bring pleasure and comfort to the individuals and families in our community.
We selected a variety of plants and flowers which consisted of hostas, tulips, euonymus shrubs, hydrangea shrubs, coral bells, Japanese willows and more. These plants and flowers were selected based on movement, texture, colors, plants that need the sun, plants that need the shade, and plants that are pollinators. Completion of Phase 2 is shown below.

Phase 3:
The final stage of this project will consist of planting sod on the ground throughout the gravel park. We anticipate starting this phase during the spring/summer of 2024.
